The following Lots 350 to 414 & 455 to 480 are from the collection of the esteemed Doug Mills His wife Rita has kindly shared some further notes & memories with us.

Over the years Doug kept visitors books, full of extra notes, there are numerous names there. Many who sought & appreciated the range of his knowledge, his advice, his understanding & many who returned time & time again, becoming good friends. Doug seldom stayed serious for long, his humour often suddenly got the better of him –his puns were notorious & he had a tremendous sense of the ridiculous. His knowledge of the subject in hand, whether it was cannon & battles, the Manton brothers & their work, other high class Gunmakers, or the original owners of the piece under discussion if it happened to be one of his own that he’d researched in his numerous heraldry books. He was interested in English history, particularly from about 1700 through to the 1850’s, though his main interest was the period when John & ‘Joe’ Manton were working.Right up to the end he could tell you the numbers on the guns which he’d bought & of numerous ones belonging to friends as well.Chasing pieces, especially those from the Lakeman Collection from the Mission to Seamen in Port Adelaide, was one of his joys & much detective work was done to find them. Of the 23 (I think) guns, he got 17 or 18, certainly all the best quality ones. He had obtained the list from Mission to Seamen after the collection was broken up, so he knew exactly what he was looking for. The longest & hardest one to track down & buy was one that went to a collection in Western Australia. That took two delightful trips & a lot of hard bargaining to get, but he eventually came home with his prize.I had several weeks among the wildflowers of Western Australia. So we were both very happy.I only found out from a friend after Doug had died that he had become regarded as the world authority on the Manton gun-makers & other makers of high quality arms of the era of his interest in collecting - the 18th & early 19th centuries - after W. Keith Neal had died. This had also been the stated opinion of the firearms expert at Christies Auction House, whom he had met on several occasions. David Back, Keith Neal’s co-author, noted in a Manton book that he’d presented to Doug that he believed he knew more about the Mantons than David himself did. I suppose I shouldn't have been surprised, as I had listened to many conversations full of facts & figures & interesting side issues interposed with more questions. It intrigued his hearers that he could remember the numbers on various pieces, where they came from, often who originally owned them & the history of who had owned them, who had them now & any alterations that had been made (usually tohis disgust), who sold them & for how much, over the past 50 or more years. His collection was never an investment. It was far more a lifelong study & appreciation of superb craftsmanship & a love of British history.
