-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The following lots 332 to 349 are a further release from the esteemed collection of Douglas Mills

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Doug Mills started collecting when he came across an old pistol as a schoolboy. At that time the weapon itself was the big interest, but as he matured, his interest in history took over & old muzzle-loading farm shotguns were added to the small collection hanging above the head of the bed – in those days these hard- working old weapons could be bought for 10 shillings, or, if it was a bit better quality, perhaps £1 or £5 (then again, he was getting only £20 or so a week with a truck to pay off).  At this stage his burning ambition was to own a flintlock, only the Collecting Bug had well & truly got him by that time & when an old flintlock pistol in poor condition came his way it wasn’t considered to be good enough to be the one that was to finalize the collection, even though it had, according to the owner, come from the collection of the famed Captain Foster Fyans of Geelong.
Eventually Doug was able to add a good flintlock, a Brown Bess musket, to his collection & he started concentrating on English Military weapons as he took a greater interest in British Military & Naval history of the 18th & 19th Centuries. He still turned up some nice pieces from farms & his wife was unwise enough to comment that she couldn’t understand & “why he didn’t concentrate on some nicer quality stuff”.

Doug had already been doing a lot of swapping & trading to get some rarer military pieces, but after coming across a book by W. Keith Neale & David H.L. Back called “The Mantons, Gunmakers” in 1967, he was really inspired to take his wife’s advice, & the swapping & trading took a different turn, while his historical interests turned more to the British aristocracy & their history. As the Manton brothers were the top gunmakers at the end of the 18th & beginning of the 19th Centuries, they were, of course, the main suppliers to the Aristocracy of high quality, elegant pieces, mostly fowling pieces & duelling pistols. So the pursuit of Manton arms, as well as arms by other top makers of the time such as Durs Egg & Henry Nock, started.

The highlight of his collecting career was his first visit to W. Keith Neale in Guernsey in 1976. For 6 weeks he stayed with Keith & helped his old retainer set up his new gun room – a huge barn which had been set up earlier as a three storey recording studio. It was ideal for the huge collection & after applying his hardware & building knowledge to the setting up of the display area, Doug had the huge pleasure of helping to unpack & set up one of the most magnificent private collections in the world.  He paid two more visits to the collection, with his wife, over the next 6 years.

His collection has been his pride & joy, we have gained entry to many places that we probably would never have visited except that he was chasing that special piece that he ‘just had to have’, especially when he was putting together the collection that had originally been in the Mission to Seamen in Port Adelaide & had been sold off, back in the mid-6os. Now in his 80’s & not in good health, he has decided to downsize the collection, but will keep a few precious items for old time’s sake.
