COMPLETE SUIT OF JAPANESE ARMOUR IN TRADITIONAL WOODEN BOX: (loose jointing) being a later copy of a ca13th century “great armour” (ō-yoroi 大鎧). Very few original armours survive, the majority extant today are copies made in the Edo period (1600 - 1868) & later. The armour offered is complete in every detail. Appropriate age related deterioration to some sleeve silk & crumbling leather suggests this suit was made in the Meiji period (1868-1912), but similar suits are still being made today.  However, all lacing of the major components is intact & in very good condition. Hinged chest piece, shoulder guards & thigh guards are of small iron scales, gold lacquered & laced together with graded ivory, light grey & purple coloured silk threads. Iron helmet with large studs, characteristic swept back “wings” & gilt decoration & neck guard similarly silk-laced. Russeted black iron facemask with moustache & large silk-laced throat guard.  Elaborate metal decorations to sleeves.  Russet blk iron shin guards. Blk fur boots. A “commander’s baton” (saihai 采配) is included. Note:This is a purpose made display or parade armour & NOT a battle armour. A magnificent display piece.
